The ultimate goal of life is happiness, and how to achieve happiness is to buy things. So says The Sims, a game that lets you create, direct and manage the lives of the residents of SimCity. The game begins with the creation of simulated people: pick a name and gender, to decide on the personality / astrological sign, and then select a view from a variety of heads, bodies and skin tones. Name, gender, appearance and does not affect the game much, but personality determines how your Sim plays with others. A Sim serious, orderly living could go crazy with a sloppy party animal – or might opposites attract, and the two could end up falling in love. After creation, the next step is to find a place to live. Again, the player can choose between the empty houses in the neighborhood and decided to buy land and design a dream home. Home construction is great, and easy to use interface design of the house could almost be its own game: players plant design, build walls, collect carpets, wallpaper, and the lining, and fill the house with furniture, decorations, equipment and appliances. You are only limited by your imagination – and the pocket of your Sims. However, the decisions made in the design and decoration of the house of your Sims are vital. A good rule of thumb is that the more expensive an item is, the better its ability to meet the needs of Sim. Each person has little Sim needs (hunger, comfort, hygiene, bladder, energy, fun, and Living Social), which can be met by interacting with other Sims and objects bought: a party with the help of a rockin ‘team music, and watch your scores improve Sims Social and Fun. That one of your Sims stoke some food from the fridge, and you must satisfy the hunger of your guests. Or is that your Sim Sim hire another in a game of chess: not only their fun and social moods improve, both Sims earn some points in their rating ability of logic – that might help with the work. One goal is to improve the playability of your Sim so he or she can climb a career ladder, which nets him or her more money, allowing the purchase of high quality, allowing you to Sim improve further. With proper care, your Sim can have a couple kids and a mansion with an indoor pool. Mismanagement of his new family, simulated, and you’ll be faced with the worst of MTV’s The Real World: jealousy is inflamed, fights break out, jobs will be lost, and the house will collapse. Achieving such a calamity is fun, almost as much as guide your Sims to material paradise, and takes much less time. The triumph or tragedy, each significant event in the life of a Sim is captured in a snapshot and stored in a photo album for later viewing. Players can also take photos at any time. The photo album feature is cool in itself, but the best part is that you can upload your album sagas www.thesims.com and share your Sims with the world. Entire families can also be uploaded and downloaded, as can houses. Want to re-create and manage their own version of Friends? Download the free face and body editor and make Sim clones of Ross, Rachel, and the rest. Want perfectly recreate the set? Capture free wall and floor texture editor. Feeling a bit silly? Add Darth Vader to the family and see what happens. With The Sims, you can create whatever – and who – you want. Playing with life, successes and emotional states of dozens of little Sims is definitely fun. In the same way that players of SimCity develop a condescending attitude toward real-world planners, players of The Sims will begin to see life as a series of challenges needs met, the game gets in your head. But that’s OK: limitless gameplay, endless variety, imaginative features Internet and the ability to play matchmaker / landlord / counselor / God makes The Sims a great way to increase your own fun. – Mike Fehlauer Pros: Unique, addictive gameplay, fun Includes photo album feature records triumphs and tragedies free uploads and downloads expand the game and allow sharing with other Sims players are smart – it is sometimes better to let them act as their own Cons: Addictive gameplay may cause loss of sleep, work complex behavior modeling program – requires serious computing power No pets, besides sex and foreign fish. That’s really all that was missing from the original edition of The Sims amazing, and the expansion of Livin ‘Large delivers these new goodies to spice up your beloved Sims existence. New characters (including a gladiator and Xena-like warriors), and, more impressively, new decorations are the reasons to buy this game. The furnishings are mostly grouped by theme, with the choice of the most authoritative medieval dungeon group. (Little Cassandra Goth has been waiting to read torchlight from the beginning.) Our personal favorite is the futuristic theme, with an optional, but it is expensive, maid / gardener robot to look fabulous modern furniture. Clearly the Sims team has been doing his research at Herman Miller, and you will have a bright red sofa foam fluid to show. But it would not be The Sims if only good taste prevailed. Bring on the mai tais with a tiki-heavy islander theme. There is also an amazing collection of carpets and grouped under the best design ideal we call “insane clown”. The rarities receiving attention include: a lame ball divination (our advice mostly about hiring a maid), a voodoo doll for hexing roommates, and a genius who offers both evil as good (dead plants? anyone?). And, yes, there is a vibrating bed to give your Sims the spice that has been missing. While the expansion does not amaze us, it did provide more of Sims humor and appreciate recalcitrant real novelty. With more attention to detail of the original offering, EA deserves Sims-like applause for this edition. – Jennifer Buckendorff
